What you’re doing is turning off the mind. A person can’t decide what to think. People can’t control their thoughts. Thinking is not voluntary. It’s an involuntary process. Thinking happens just like your heart beats and your glands secrete and your lungs breathe. None of these things is a voluntary process. It’s happening to you. Thinking is a “happening”. It’s not a “doing”. The only thing a person can do about thinking is to turn it off and slow it down. Meditation is a method. It is a modality of turning off your thinking. Our “thinking” is madness. Thinking doesn’t start anywhere, and it doesn’t go anywhere.
