Dr. Nathan Goodyear from An Oasis of Healing here, have you ever heard the statement, “cancer loves sugar”? That statement is actually true, but it’s oversimplified. There are what are cells, cancer cells, that lack stem activity and then there is cancer stem cells. These cancer stem cells have stem activity. What is a cancer stem cell? First off, it is the ultimate backup. Everybody that has a computer knows how important it is to back up the overall system. However, a cancer back up in the cancer stem cell is not something that we want. It is the worst of the backup reality. When you look at the statement that “cancer loves sugar” this applies aggressively to cancer cells that lack stem cell activity. This is where the Warburg effect or what’s called aerobic glycolysis takes effect. Cancer cells use sugar to make energy, but they do it very inefficiently. Now, new studies that are very recent and new knowledge is starting to highlight the complexity that is the reality of cancer. What these new studies are showing are cancer stem cells don’t need sugar at all! In fact, they prefer amino acids such as glutamine, glutamate, cysteine, and then the branch chains, leucine, valine, and isoleucine as well as fats. Even breast cancer can upregulate an enzyme that uses fat as a source of energy. That is cancer stem cells. So, does cancer love sugar, yes it does. Do cancer stem cells love sugar? Some, but many don’t. The majority love protein, the building blocks of amino acids that make up the protein and fats. That’s the evidence. That’s the reality and the complexity of cancer.
